Extratime was developed by two parents of children with profound disabilities who were frustrated at the lack of out-of-school care for their own children.
Extratime’s mission is to provide high-quality, affordable out-of-school activities for children and young people aged 5-19 years with disabilities, in a safe, fun environment working closely with parents/carers, school staff and other professionals to fully meet the needs of every child/young person and in partnership with statutory and non-statutory organisations to increase the opportunities for inclusive play and leisure.
The first club opened in September 2003. There are now 3 after school clubs and associated holiday playschemes providing activities for 5 - 16 year olds from both mainstream and special needs schools. More recently, extratime, in partnership with Sussex Central YMCA, started delivering a programme of holiday activities to young with disabilities aged 11-19 years at mainstream youth centres. All the projects cater for children and young people who have a wide range of disabilities; physical, learning and behavioural, and one-to-one support is provided to those who need it.
Extratime also provides a training, outreach and consultancy service to other providers of play and leisure activities to support the inclusion of children and young people with disabilities in their service.
